Another demo track.
In 2011, my wife died from a brain tumour. She was 27. I wasn't a songwriter at the time. I asked someone else to write a song about it, and she wrote a beautiful song, but I always felt that was a cop out. Eventually in 2021, at the 10 year anniversary of Jane's death, I wrote this song. After writing the lyrics, I had no inspiration left for the chords and melody.
lyrics
His fur is thin
From when you held him tight
And he has stains from tears
You cried in the night
In the nights when you were lonely
When life did not seem worthwhile
You would wrap your arms around him
And be with me for a while
He was like a friend
We took him everywhere
Didn't even have a name
To us he was just Bear
He was with us when they told you
There was nothing left to try
And you held him when you left me
When we finally said goodbye
[Chorus]
Why
Do we measure love in pain
The more it hurts to lose someone
The more we tell ourselves that we would do it all again
When we cry
Are all the tears the same
When all we have is memories
The joy and grief remain
[Verse 3]
There's a tiny stitch
In the middle of his snout
That bear you used to hold
Holds your ashes now
When I'm looking at your picture
When my heart's full of your smile
I can wrap my arms around him
And I'm with you for a while
